Marlow, Wymondham, Ipswich England 2 - 12 February Howard has been a fan of the Ipswich Town Football Club since he was a lad and went each week with his Grandad. So of course he wanted to go to a game since we are in Europe for the winter. We took the opportunity to catch up on friends while we were in England. View from the Thames near Marlow After picking up the car that we were borrowing for the week we went to Marlow on the Thames where our friends Glynis and Tim's barge KISOT is moored for the winter. They fully fitted out the barge themselves, and now live on her full time. Their mooring is free during the winter and is next to a park and is very close to the village, where we went for a market on Saturday morning - lots of yummy things. In the afternoon we headed to a local bewery to watch some Six Nations Rugby. On Sunday, after a slow start, we headed upstream through a lock to pump out, and then took a little cruise downstream through the next lock to have a look at the neighbourhood and catch up with Andy, another friend from the Barge Association. There are a lot of interesting and large houses and buildings along the river. On Monday we headed off to Wymondham (pronounced Wyndham) where we stayed with our friends Chris and Diana. They have become very involved in the local town since they retired from barging. On Tuesday we visited the local abbey which is very impressive. On Wednesday we headed for the Norfolk Broads where we met up with Phil and Nardia who live on their boat there. Then the 6 of us headed out for a delightful lunch at a nearby gastropub. On Thursday it rained most of the day so we mostly stayed at home and enjoyed lots of long conversations, but we did go out to see the towns museum, which is in an old bridewell (prison). It was really well set out and explained a lot about the town and it's history. On Friday, we left after lunch to head to Ipswich, where we had booked a hotel near the Portman Rd football ground. We were pleased to be able to get dinner and breakfast there, as my foot was bothering me. Saturday was the big day, and we walked over to the ground with plenty of time to spare. It was a tight game with an exciting last 10 minutes to finish with 2-2 draw. Howard was happy to have revisited the ground and team. Sunday we headed to Windsor, and returned our borrowed car at Eton on Monday morning, and then caught 3 trains and a bus to get back to the boat.
All in all a very enjoyable and successful trip.

Thanks for sharing a fascinating trip. There's a whole world of barging I was unaware of!
