7 June Andrea and Ieuan had a car so we were able to visit Sloten even though the weather was terrible. It is a picture postcard town, even in the wind and rain.

8 June We planned to stay in Lemmer for 8 nights, but ended up staying for 10 as we didn't want to travel in gale force winds.
Lemmer was a delightful town and we were happy to stay there. 3 June We went to the Ir.D.F. Woudagemaal, the largest still operational steam-powered pumping station in the world. It was advertised as the Steam Cathedral. It was very interesting. It is now a UNESCO world heritage site, and is still used a few days each year for pumping water out of Friesland into the Isselmeer during extremely wet conditions.
Today we visited the hospital in Meppel to get my half plaster caste replaced with a full cast. I was looking forward to having a full cast as I expected to be in less pain as it would support my arm better, but I wasn't looking forward to the actual process.
We left our boat in Lemmer at 10am. we had a 30-40 minute walk to the bus station, then the bus trip to Heerenveen, and a train to Meppel. We arrived just before 12 noon, so decided to have lunch at the cafe across the road from the station. There we ordered the Dutch specialities croquettes and cheese souffles. Rather disappointing though. Saturday 27th May Saturday morning we had a lazy start. We enjoyed the view we had of people coming and going. The people on the boats rafted up against us were from Germany and they hired these boats each year at this time. There were 47 in their group on the 5 tjalks. Each one had to cross our bow in order to leave their boat - to have a shower, go to the loo or whatever. They left Urk that morning for the next stage of their trip.
Among the many ships leaving were a couple of large old sailing yachts. |
