27-29 June On Wednesday, we decided to leave ‘s Hertogenbosch as planned. This meant going through the lock at 11am. Eliza’s flight was to arrive at 9:30am so we knew she couldn’t get to us before we left so we had two plans, Plan B – she would come to ‘s Hertogenbosch and then catch a bus to Heudsen, and Plan C – if she was able to get through Schipol quickly, was to meet us somewhere on the way to Heusden.

20-26 June 's Hertogenbosch (otherwise known as Den Bosch), is a lovely city that we visited last year as well.
13-17 June On Wednesday we had a long day to get to Leukermeer - about 5 hours. It was overcast and cool so a good cruising day. We passed this - looked like an old castle converted into a hotel.
10-11 June Our next stop was Roermond, or to be more exact the Maasplassen. These are the lakes around Roermond. There are about 3,000 hectare lakes in the area. Someone told us that there were more lakes by area here than in the whole of Friesland.
It took only 90 minutes to cruise here from Maasbracht on Sunday morning after filling up with water. 7-9 June Our next stop was Maasbracht. We moored at the Passenthaven, close to where large commercials (80-110m) moor. You can see them in the background of the below photo.
From Herentals we headed toward the Dutch border.
Our first day we had 6 locks each less than 3 m to go up. Each lock keeper looked after 2 locks and so we had a chance to chat with them. As it was a Sunday the locks didn't commence operations until 10am, and there were no commercials on the water and we saw only one cruiser on the move. We did pass a group of kayakers, and one paddled next to our boat so that we could chat. We moored as planned near the intersection with another canal. We set out for Herental on Friday morning. It was drizzly misty morning when we set out. We had to go through one lock, before turning onto the Albert Canal. A large commercial was approaching behind us so we slowed to let them pass.
The Albert canal is quite busy but very wide so not scary at all. We waited a a pair of bridges just before Herentals as it was narrow and they were travelling at 10-15 kms an hour. Then into Herentals lock and up to our delightful mooring on the outside of the jatchhaven (marina). |
