22-25 Aug We arrived in Liège on Tuesday just after 2pm and thought we would stay for 3 or 4 nights. But we ended up booking for a week as it was cheaper than for 4 nights.
We then went for a bike ride to the Tourist Information and to the supermarket. Unfortunately I jarred my right hand quite badly going over a bump on the bike. We therefore put the bikes away for a couple of days to give my hand a rest. Last in Liege we went to the Cité Lumiere, with our Marina neighbours, brits Jenny and Adrian. This was a sound and light show where the lights were shone onto the walls of the interior courtyard of the old Bishop's Palace. There were some dancers and some guys on stilts all lit as well. Our french wasn't good enough to catch the details, but we were impressed with the light show. I managed to get a couple of photos hand-held.
22 Aug Today we left the Netherlands and headed into Belgium with Moondance. This is the end of her touring in the Netherlands for this year, but we expect to return next year.
18-21 Aug We had heard that Maastricht was a lovely city so we planned to spend 4 nights here. We are moored in "het Bassin" which is very close to town. There is a lock to enter and leave and even a fountain.
10 Aug Yesterday (Thursday), we left Sleeuwijk and headed to Heusden. The first couple of kms were on the Waal before we turned off onto the Afgedamde Maas at Woudrichem. Moondance did a great job against the current, but we were all pleased to be on the quieter waters with fewer large ships.
9 Aug Yesterday (Wednesday) we cycled about 3kms to Woudrichem (ponounced Wow-dri-kem). This is a star fort town that was strategically important during dutch history as it was where the Wall River and the Afgedamde Maas River meet to become the Boven Merwede.
We bought the english self-guided tour and had a nice look around the town. 7-8 Aug We are moored at Sleeuwijk, which is over the river from Gorinchem. We decided to moor here as we could book in and they have plenty of spots for a boat over 20m long. We couldn't reach the main moorings in Gorinchem as in the north there is a fixed bridged only 2.85m high, and in the south the lock is only 4.5 m wide. We are 3m high and 4.47m wide, (we are told) so we decided not to try. There are a lot of large and fancy boats for sale in the marina, but none have tempted us to trade-in Moondance. There is quite a contrast from the fancy boats in the marina, and the working boats next to it.
