4 July Today we set off for Dokkum. This is the first time we have cruised without extra crew since I broke my arm. This meant that where there was rope work - mooring or casting off - or when Howard needed a break, I would be at the helm. My hand is still very swollen and sore, but it is slowly getting more flexible, so we were quite confident that I would be able to manage.

4th June Today we leave Leeuwarden after more than a week based here. Leeuwarden is the capital of Friesland and is the European City of Culture 2018 - which means there is a lot if building going on this year. With just over 100 thousand people, it is not a large city, but there is a lot of history here and we enjoyed looking around. There was a lot more to do and see, so perhaps we'll be back. 3 July Over this trip we have been trying to find out more about the past of our boat. One day while we were a moored at Workum, a man stopped to ask about the boat. It turned out that he was related to the man who converted the barge to its current form as a live-aboard boat, Henk Heidstra. He had stayed on the boat when he was a child and told us a bit of the history and also put us in touch with Jilt, Henk's son, who now lives in Leeuwarden. We invited JIlt to visit us while we were in Leeuwarden, and later his sister Hanneke and her family to also visited the boat. Jilt was kind enough to show us some old photos of the boat that he let us scan. This evening he also brought his younger son over to see the boat too. Historical photos provided by Jilt Heindstra
Sunday 2nd July This afternoon we went to Franeker for a side-trip, taking the short train trip there with our bikes. We wanted to visit the planetarium, which is over 230 years old. It was built in the living room of a wool comber and amateur astronomer, to show the movement of the sun, earth moon and planets. It is the world's oldest working planetarium
28-30th June Whilst in Leeuwarden we took a couple of days off to visit Harlingen and Terschelling.
