5-6 August Our good friends Mike and Sophie and their two kids Alex and Amelia joined us for the weekend. They met us at Vianen on Friday night, and then we travelled to Meerkerk on Saturday and through to Gorninchem on Saturday, mooring just over the river on Sunday afternoon.

3-4 August Geoff and Schon left us on Thursday morning and since our boat is too high to get through the low bridges of Utrecht we had to venture out onto the Amsterdam-Rhine canal, which is where all the big commecials travel.
2 Aug We decided to take another day in this area rather than rush on, so we had a slow start this morning and then went for a bike ride. We checked out the entry from the Vecht into the main Amsterdam-Rhine canal and then headed down to Oud-Zuilen where there is Slot Zuilen (another castle). We didn't go inside but had a look around the outside, and then had a look around the town.
1 Aug Tuesday we caught a train into Utrecht. Our barge is too high to get all the way into town, so this seemed the easiest solution. Only 2 stops from Maarssen where we are staying.
31 July On Monday afternoon we visited De Haar Castle. This castle was restored and renovated in the 18th century from the ruins, when the baron married a Rothschild heiress. It has a history of entertaining the rich and famous since then until the mid 19th century. In 2000 the family donated it to a foundation on the proviso that the family can use the castle each September in perpetuity.
