9-11 October From Seville we picked up our hire car and drove to Cordoba where we stayed for 2 nights. On the way we stopped at Almodóvar del Río. This town is only 30 minutes from Cordoba but is right out in the country. It has an impressive hilltop castle looking our over the town which was originally built by the moors in the eighth century and was renovated/reconstructed in the early 20th century. Another location used in the TV series Game of Thrones. After a tour of the castle and a nice lunch in town, we drove on to Cordoba. There is a maze of narrow one way streets and we looped around 3 times before we managed to get to our apartment which was right in the old town. That night we went out to the river for some night photos of Cordoba We only had one full day in Cordoba so we went on a walking tour in the morning. At 5:30 we did a guided tour of the Mezquita - the Cathedral/Mosque. It is very interesting. Cordoba was the capital of Moorish Spain for hundreds of years and various emirs and califs had built, then extended, the mosque in the city. After the catholics reconquered the city they converted many local mosques into churches. That is what happened to the main mosque, the Mesquita. In the 16th century the local bishop got permission (against the wishes of the local people) to build a traditional cathedral within the mosque which involved pulling down some of the mosque. The resulting structure is part mosque, part catholic cathedral - very unique. Luckily there is enough of the old mosque to get a good idea of what it must have been like.
