11-13 August After Heusden we headed for 's Hertogenbosch (known as Den Bosch). We travelled along the Maas river before turning into the Maxima canal. We were surprised to find a gigantic ship building operation just next door to the historic town of Heusden. We were a bit surprised to find our last lift bridge on the way to our mooring to be showing two red lights when we arrived (meaning out of service), but after a bit of investigating we discovered that it's hours had changed and it now only opens 5 times a day on weekdays (3 times a day on the weekend), so we had to wait for 75 minutes until the next opening time - so plenty of time for lunch. Probably because of the problems in getting access, our mooring on the south side of the city wasn't very busy, but was still very convenient to the city. We loved looking around this city. A highlight for me was the Sint Janskathedraal (Saint John's Cathedral). This was a catholic cathedral, and after the austere Dutch Reformed churches we had seen further north, this was ornate and fancy. This was the place that the artist Jheronimus Bosch was born, worked and died and there were a lot of reminders of his work around the city, especially as they celebrated 650 years since he died last year. Bosch was not his family name, but referred to the town he lived in. There were lot's of interesting sights around the town. My good friend Hilary joined us on Saturday night and we were able to share this lovely city with her. Including some culinary delights - Bosch Bols (cream puffs covered in chocolate) for lunch and then mussels for tea. Howard managed to squeeze in some fishing too.

A wonderful city, I think it is my favourite in the Netherlands although we only had a short visit to barge friends, not with Catharina Elisabeth. You certainly found a plethora of interesting sculptures - few of which I remember seeing. One not there was high up on the Sint-Janskathedraal, the angel that has a mobile phone calling God, with a number at street level that you can call also. So cute. Wonderful photos, thanks [We're almost at the end of the Somme, heading for the beach at St Valery]
