2 - 8 January 2024 Our first guest for 2024, Hilary, arrived in the evening of the 2nd January. So we had almost a week to do a few things around Paris with her. Thanks to Hilary for some of these images. Le Festival du Merveilleux On Wednesday we went to the Rothko Exhibition which was held at the Louis Vuitton Foundation, which is the Bois de Boulogne, at the opposite side of Paris to us. The building is quite interesting. Rothko is known for his abstract colourful images, but the exhibition showed a huge range of his work, starting from his more figurative earlier works. Hilary and I had appointments in the afternoon, so we went home again after the show. Hilary met up with another friend on Thursday so Howard and I visited the Atelier de Lumieres ourselves. An old foundry has been converted into an exhibition space where they project images on the walls, celiing and even floor. As it was school holidays it was quite busy, but we enjoyed the exhibition of Oceans, featuring underwater photography of Brian Skerry. In the evening we went Le Train Bleu with Hilary, the restaurant at the Gare de Lyon. The food is terrific and the building and decor amazing. On Friday we decided to have a quiet morning and then went for a bike ride in the afternoon. We went along the river to Place de la Concorde, and then to La Bon Marché on the left bank (a famous department store), and then home. In the evening we took Hilary to the Louvre - we are able to take in one guest each on Friday evenings. We decided to visit the crown jewels which are in a fabulous room still decorated as it was in the days of the old palace. After this we went to the nearby exhibition rooms showing a temporary exhibition, Naples In Paris. As well as seeing the paintings we had some lovely views from the windows. After we left the Louvre we wandered up to our restaurant, via the Palais Royale. A lovely walk in the middle of Paris. We had dinner at the Vaudeville Bistro. Its a great resturant, a really bustling place and would recommend. Saturday we visited the Musée des Arts Forains (Fairground Museum) for Le Festival du Merveilleux, which they hold each year around Christmas time. There were lots of quirky and interesting things and some great performances to see. We especially loved the quirky group of performers wandering along the street, and the Vélocipede. The Vélocipede was a merry-go-round, powered by the participants cycling on their mounts causing the carousel to go around at a great rate. The attendant had to be on the ride so he could put the brake on to stop us. Very clever. On Sunday, Hilary's last full day with us, we were having Hélène and Didier over for lunch. They are good friends of Hilary's who had had us over to their place when we were in Paris in 2022. In the morning Howard and Hilary went out to the Market and to a Fromagerie to get a few things for lunch and especially her favourite Epoisse cheese. They also visited a nice Cave for some wine. We had a raclette again for our main which was very nice, and we had lovely afternoon, speaking mostly in french. The Cheese Course It had been a great visit with Hilary, who left just before the cold weather set in.
