Gurgy, Laroche-Saint-Cydroine, Migennes, Joigny, Villeneuve-sur-Yonne FR 21-27 July 2023 The weather seemed to have turned and we started having grey skies and sometimes rainy days. We left Auxerre for Gurgy on a Friday. After the first lock we were delayed to wait for 2 other boats. As you can see in the photo, some of the locks have sloping sides - this one had one vertical side and one sloping side with a floating pontoon - but that isn't always the case we've been told. We did look around Gurgy on the bikes - it was a nice town, but nothing remarkable. At the mooring there were 3 little cabins, each selling produce or food. On Sunday we headed to Laroche-Saint-Cydroine. We passed "Simon's Yard", a well known place for repairs and mooring, and where our friends Ian and Lisette have spent a lot of time. The first lock after Laroche had limited hours, it was only available at 10am, 2pm and 5pm each day. Friends from the Rally, Ade and Rose, hadn't realised and were sitting in the lock, so after lunch we cycled up to say hello. And then we cycled to Migenne, which is close by and is the first (or last) town on the Canal du Borgoyne. The next morning we set off to catch the 10am lock, on the way to Joigny. We arrived on Monday, so, of course, the tourist information office was closed, so we had a ride around the town to see what we could see, between rain showers. We also visited the local Intermaché supermarket, and found a hairdresser who was doing cuts without reservations, so were able to get haircuts which were rather overdue. Our mooring was on a quay on the river and had nice views to the town on the other side of the river. Tuesday was a very rainy day and we only got out a little in the afternoon, but in the evening we went out for a nice meal at "Rive Gauche" which was walking distance from our mooring. And we had a lovely sunset on our return to the boat. Our next stop was Villeneuve-sur-Yonne. On the way I managed to get a few photos of Herons. At Villeneuve, we got a map of the town, with the sites to see. There was a lovely path around the old town, which we think followed the path of the old moat. There were 2 gates to the town still in place, which used to be exactly the same. Now the Sens Gate, which is close to the town hall and gardens, has more of the original features than the Joigny Gate. Part of the walk was onto the narrow island opposite the boat that had only a rough trail, but nice views. Some other interesting buildings along the old moat/city wall route, and in the town. On Thursday afternoon we went into town to look through the church. And that was the end of our first week on the Yonne since leaving Auxerre.

I adore your photography, Deb. The architectural highlights are impressive. Howard looks particularly happy when fishing! 🐠 Love you.
