24-26 July Spakenburg Canal and Shipyard Geoff and Liz joined us in Harderwijk on Monday morning and we were able to have a look around the town before rain set-in. We were moored just outside the inner harbour, very close to town. Even though we have stayed at Harderhaven before, which is just the other side of the meer, this was a different view of the city. And because we entered the city from a different direction, we also saw different parts of the city than we had seen before. On Tuesday we made an early start to get to Spakenburg with a good chance of getting a mooring in their tiny harbour. We arrived at about 11:30, but there were already no gaps long enough for us to fit, but the harbour master instructed us to moor alongside a tjalk (barge) in a great spot, just as the canal got quite narrow. I had to back in, which was a challenge, but we did it on the second pass, which we were happy about. It was a great spot. Spakenburg harbour We had a look a round the town which seemed to have been originally a fishing village. Later we visited the neighbouring town of Bunschoten which was further inland and more rural. We did see a couple of older ladies wearing the traditional costume - one riding her bike and one just in the garden of her house. Bunschoten In the evening, the ship from the mooring next to us arrived That spot was a permanent mooring for a boat that seemed to have been collecting weed from the canals. More of Spakenburg Originally we planned to leave early on Wednesday, but we heard that there was a market or festival being held so we decided to leave at midday instead and have a look around in the morning. It was a huge market with lots of stalls and with plenty of people in traditional costume, from babies through to grandmas. Spakenburg Market There were people doing traditional crafts as well. I especially was impressed with the lace making. Spakenburg and Bunschoten use to be neighbouring towns but are now one municipality. But they still have two football teams that are arch rivals. Each has its own stadium and they are right next to each other.
