Visit by Martyn Amiens FR 8 - 14 June 24 Hour Fishing in Vlaardingen NL 17-19 June While I was away Howard had his friend Martyn to visit. He arrived on Wednesday evening. Howard met him at the Amiens station and they walked home. Of course Howard and Martyn spent a lot of their time fishing, but also looked around Amiens including a visit to the Cathedral. On Friday they collected a hire car and visted the WWI Museums and memorials at Peronne and then after lunch at Villers Bretoneaux. On Saturday, Martyn was keen to fish in Belgium, so they got up early and drove to Strepy-Thieu in Belgium in seach of Bream, where Howard had had good success before. Unfortunately, they didn't catch bream, but Martyn did catch a lovely Zander. Martyn with his Zander They also had a look around the ascenseur (boat lift), which is always impressive. On Sunday they returned to the Sir John Monash Centre at Villers Bretoneaux, as they hadn't had enough time on the Friday. They found it really interesting and spent about another 4 hours. On Monday after fishing (Martyn finally caught a tench), and some shopping they went for a wander around the city including the Saint Pierre Park, and had a few beers for happy hour for the costly sum of 8 euros Martyn with his tench Howard with his bream They had to return the car in the evening and had a farewell dinner on the boat, as Martyn had to leave early on Tuesday morning. After spending a bit of time with me and my friends Howard left Corbie on Friday 17th to pick up a hire carto drive to the Netherlands. There he meet up with our good friend Ruud to complete in the 24 hour pairs fishing competition in Vlaardingen. This has become a fixture each year when we are in Europe. They had a great time and managed to come 8th overall our of 28 teams. They escpecially appreciated Ruud's wife Petra bring over some Chinese take away for dinner Saturday evening.
While Howard was in the Netherlands he picked up a few things for us including a portable air conditioner, gas bottles for the BBQ (as the connection to French gas bottles is different), and a wire brush attachment for his grinder and, of course, the last box of paint that had had to be resent.
