Tuesday 27th June Today we went to Meppel again to the hospital, this time to have my cast removed. It was 6 weeks since the accident yesterday, so it was time to unveil the new arm. I had got to the stage where I could grip things a little with my broken arm, even spread soft butter or write a few words. But the skin on my hand had died and was peeling off, and I was sure it would be the same inside the cast. Also it was quite tight so my arm would ache whenever it swelled up even a little from walking or riding. So I was ready for the cast to be off, and was counting down the days. So at the hospital they took off the cast and sent me for an x-ray. All good - although there is some slight displacement which we knew about from the start. Photo: Howard Johns Of course my wrist is very stiff and I have exercises to do to get the full range of motion back. But we plan to be based here in Leeuwarden for at least a week, so I'll hopefully be much improved in that time. The arm too has lost of lot of muscle so it quite skinny. I also have a brace that I can wear if it gets tired. I think I'll wear it when riding too for at least a few days. It is in basic black. But best to start using the arm as normally s much as possible. Since we were seeing the specialist I asked him about my left elbow. This had also been hurt in the accident and is still sore and I am unable to fully extend it. I had seen the physio in Workum and was doing some exercises that had improved it a lot, and she had said that there was something wrong and it may even be cracked. The doctor agreed that it was probably cracked, but since the treatment was the same - fracture or not, there was no point getting an x-ray. So I will continue to do the exercises for the elbow that the physio set (as well as the ones for me knee set by my physio in Melbourne).
