13 14 May After our whisper boat trip we decided to head off to Ossenzijl and have lunch there. Our guests Deb and Peter decided to ride ahead to Ossenzijn. It was about a 40 minute trip down the river on the barge and 15 minutes on the bike and the weather was quite good. When we got to our appointed mooring place at closer to 1:15, there were a couple of boats moored there for their lunch break. Deb and Peter had to ask one to move along so that we could fit into the gap. A bit of manoeuvring with quite an audience and we got into place, and plugged into the power. Yay! Woops – I spoke too soon – the electricity tripped and we couldn’t get power again, and the harbour master wouldn’t be back until about 4pm. Deb and Peter had found out from locals that the best supermarket was in Oldemarkt about 4-5 kms away so we decided to cycle there. Originally we had planned to cruise there, but had thought that, since it is so close we will avoid a couple of hours on the barge and just cycle. So we had a simple cycle to Oldemarkt, a look around town, a trip to the supermarket and ATM, and then we came back following the canal that we would have taken. This was a longer route and into a head wind, but we were glad to be doing it on bikes rather than on the barge as it was a windy narrow canal. At one point we took a hand punt across the canal which was a bit of fun. Back at the barge, the harbor master confirmed that their power was only 6 amps which means that we cannot take it. So we decided that it will be a meal in a restaurant tonight and showers in the shower block. On the Sunday we cruised to Steenwijk, a pleasant couple of hours on the canal. Steenwijk is a larger city and we enjoyed a cycle along the old city walls and through a lovely park behind an old mansion. We decided that we would stay 2 nights here.
