Saturday 6th May On Saturday we went to Lelystad for the day. The main reason was to visit a fishing tackle shop. Howard wanted a new fishing box. As I understand it, this is a critical piece of fishing equipment - it holds your stuff and has a nice padded seat for you to sit on. Anyway, Howard's current box is too big to fit easily into the hold. So he leaves it sitting in the kitchen. But he found one on the internet that is smaller and so can be kept in the forepeak - freeing up space in the kitchen. We tried to buy it on-line, but at the time we didn't have a Dutch bank account and they wouldn't accept an Australian credit card. So we decided to go to the store in Lelystad as it is only a short distance by train from Kampen. Lelystad was not on our list of places to go as it is fairly new. It was established only 50 years ago on the newly reclaimed land in Flevoland. The thing we didn't realise is that the train to Lelystad goes from Kampen-Zuid, which is a new station built on the out skirts of town, which is miles away. So Saturday morning we set off on our bicycles to Kampen Zuid - over 20 minutes cycle away. Then from there catch the train to Lelystad. Then a short walk to the fishing tackle shop. The shop itself was very impressive. Unlike many fishing tackle shops we have been in (of course we have been in many), this was dedicated to fishing, over 2 levels. On the upper level they had the poles set up over the void above the lower floor. Since the poles can be 16m or longer, it was quite a site. Howard was very happy to look around and see all the choices and equipment. And I was happy enough sitting in the nice padded fishing chairs catching up on emails and facebook. Unfortunately, Howard's box was not in stock so he has ordered it, and will have to come back to pick it up. Actually I think he is happy to have an excuse to come back. Then we caught up with friends Jean-Marie and Leona who we met through the DBA and who are both commercial ships captains and work together and live in Lelystad. They took us to their home where we had a delightful lunch. They have a fabulous view out over Markermeer and the Lelystad harbour. Then we had a walk around the harbour. We found a museum where they were wither building replicas or restoring old boats and a replica of the Batavia, and the "garage" where the Ijssel Kogge is being conserved. It is a lovely spot. Then we returned to Leona and Jean-Marie's place, where we mentioned that we wanted to go to the appliance store to look for a microwave convection oven. Leona said she had one and did I want to see it. To my surprise it was downstairs stored in a cupboard. It was almost exactly the same one as I had seen and liked on the internet. I said what are you doing with it. They said they were going to sell it on the internet. So in the end we bought it, and Jean-Marie gave us a lift home (as we couldn't have carried it on our bikes), and then (after a coffee of course), he gave us a lift to Kampen-Zuid station so that we could pick up our bikes to ride home. What a lucky coincidence. And a lovely day. 11 May - No sign of the generator parts, but we are heading off today to Vollenhove anyway.
