22-25 Aug We arrived in Liège on Tuesday just after 2pm and thought we would stay for 3 or 4 nights. But we ended up booking for a week as it was cheaper than for 4 nights. We then went for a bike ride to the Tourist Information and to the supermarket. Unfortunately I jarred my right hand quite badly going over a bump on the bike. We therefore put the bikes away for a couple of days to give my hand a rest. On Wednesday and Thursday we followed some self-guided walking tours around the city and took a tourist train around as well. We didn't know until we arrived, but Liège is one of the largest cities in Belgium and has been a major capital for many centuries before the French Revolution. One of our first stops was the Grand Curtius museum, built in the 17th century house of rich munitions manufacturer. It covered the history of the area from pre-history to modern times. Really interesting. Our next stop was the Saint Barthelemy Collegiate Church which has a famous baptismal font made in the 12th century. Lot's of other interesting things to see on Wednesday. On Thursday we again set out on a self-guided tour. Our first stop was Saint -Jaques church. This had an amazing roof as well as some lovely statues and decoration. The other church we visited was the Collegiate church of Saint-Denis Quite a lot of other interesting things to see as well. When we returned to the Marina in the evening a big cruise ship was just leaving. He had to drop the roof of the dining room and bridge to get under the bridges here. Howard watched the confusion as they got ready to leave for quite a while. Friday we had a quiet day, but we did go out to have Liège Waffles and see the train station on our bikes. The station is a beautiful modern building. We also saw the paradis building up close, another lovely modern building that dominates the skyline here. In the evening we had Nettie and John over for pre-dinner drinks, which lasted for 3 hours. It was great to catch up with them - we had met them before at a Melbourne DBA chapter get together just before we left.
