18-21 Aug We had heard that Maastricht was a lovely city so we planned to spend 4 nights here. We are moored in "het Bassin" which is very close to town. There is a lock to enter and leave and even a fountain. We arrived on Friday and had a very lazy afternoon, especially as it was raining. On Saturday we did a bike tour which gave us a nice overview of the city. One of the highlights was a visit to a 5 star hotel, the Kruisheren Hotel, that had been converted from a monastery. Very tastefully done, with clear indication of what was new and what was old. We were also surprised to see a statue of D'Artagnon, of musketeers fame. He was a real person and died here in 1673. Of course he was a captain of the musketeers of King Luis XIV of France, and so was the enemy. It is the only statue of an enemy in the Netherlands. After the tour we dropped into the bookshop that was supposed to be one of the top 5 most beautiful bookshops. It was another converted church. For me, not as nice as the one we'd seen in Zwolle. On Sunday morning I had a nice sleep in, and Howard did some fishing. In the afternoon we went to Fort Sint Pieter which is on a hill overlooking the city. There we dd two guided tours, one of the fort and one of the cave complex below where they had mined sandstone. It was a tourist attraction for many years and there was art work and even old graffiti down there. All in all an interesting and enjoyable afternoon. Sunday night we went to one of the restaurants in 't Bassin. We had a lovely meal and then a walk home. Monday Howard did some jobs around the boat and I went our to take some more photo of the town. We really liked Maastricht. It has a lovely feel and I wish we had more time to stay here.
Tomorrow (Tuesday) we are off to Belgium.
