23 May On Wednesday we travelled to Lier. This time we had checked the times of the tide, so we were OK to go through the tidal lock leaving at 9am. We also found the two locks on the canal much easier as we were going down, and there was less turbulence in the lock. We also drove onto the rope so that I didn't have to put any strain on my shoulder. The stretch of water that we had thought looked like a drain on our way down, now looked like a pleasant river. We had to turn right at the Rupel and waited while a big commercial went past and then followed a smaller cruiser, having chatted to both on the VHF. The couple on the smaller boat were British and we spoke to them a couple of times on our way to Lier where we both moored at the long pontoon - and were the only ones there. It was only then that I realised it was Jude (Burt) and Roger on "Beats Working" that we had met in Diksmuide last year. Jude, a WOB, I had also chatted with on facebook a couple of times. We had them in for a cuppa, and the following day we went to their boat for drinks. Among a row of moored houseboats was an old paddle steamer. Quite a lot of flotsam to avoid in the river
