Montargis FR 10-12 May 2023 Our first stop on the Canal de Briare was at Montargis. We had been told that this was a beautiful town, decorated with lots of flowers. Unfortunatley we were too early for the flowers, but we still found it a beautiful town. It is nicknamed the "Venise du Gatinais" because of the many small canals that run through the town. Our first morning in Montargis was very wet and we settled in to do jobs, but there was a break in the weather and we cycled down to the Tourist Information and picked up a map of the bridges, which was a tour of the town to see some of the 131 bridges in the town, as well as some of the sites. By the time we had finished it had started raining again so I decided it was a good oportunity to go for a swim. But by the time I returned the weather had clead up so we started the tour then. By late afternoon the weather was looking ominous so we returned home. On Thursday morning Howard started the day fishing, catching a good haul of good sized skimmers and quality roach. After he was cleaned up and had breakfast we headed out to continue our tour, stopping for lunch while we were out. The next morning (Friday) we left Montargis. We got to the first lock and our tele-command didn't work. They said that's normal - someone will come. And sure enough an eclusier (lock keeper) came along and let us into the lock and then into the following lock. We told him we were off to Montbouy and he said to call for the lock when we wanted to leave Montbouy, and that they were closed for lunch between 12 and 1pm. With that we left Montargis, with a nice view of the harbour that is currently being rebuilt.
