27-28 July On Thursday we headed for Weesp, which meant starting down the Vecht River past Muiden. Muiden has a famous castle (slot) and a lot of boats. We got a nice mooring at Weesp which is almost a suburb of Amsterdam, then we took Geoff and Liz to see the Rhein-Amsterdam canal, which is a major shipping canal just the other side of Weesp town. When we got there there was an emerency services boat hanging around, and a little later it became obvious what he was waiting for. He was managing traffic as a barge (2 barges actually) with a tug at each end emerged from the side canal to enter the main canal. It was as long as the width of the main canal so all traffic had to stop for them to get out and then turn. Quite a feat. Then another turned into the side canal. We were really pleased to have seen that. We had the rest of the day to look around Weesp with Geoff and Liz. Nature put on a bit of a show after dinner on the back deck. Geoff and Liz left early on Friday morning and we had a nice quiet day. A good plan as it was quite rainy.
