13-17 June On Wednesday we had a long day to get to Leukermeer - about 5 hours. It was overcast and cool so a good cruising day. We passed this - looked like an old castle converted into a hotel. In many places along the Maas they have ferries to transport cars, bikes and pedestrians across the river. Probably cheaper than building a bridge. On Thursday we cycled to Overloon, travelling across on one of these ferries. They are pulled across by cables. Overloon was about 45mins by bike, and went to visit the WWII museum there. The museum was built in a park where there was a ropes course and some war sculptures, and even a tank. The museum was great, exceeding all our expectations. The first part described the war and followed different peoples experiences during the war. This included a Dutchman who sympathised with the National Socialist Party and went to war against Russia for the Germans, a young jewish girl that lost most of her family, a young girl who almost starved to death during the hunger winter in 1944-45, an artist who became a forger and a member of the resistance, and a lady who kept a diary during the whole war to share with her daughter who was in South Africa. The second part was a huge shed that contained all sorts of WWII equipment from planes and tanks to chainsaws and bombs. Many were set up in dioramas. It was huge and impressive. Unfortunately on the way home we were rained on and arrived back at the boat completely wet. The Leukermeer Marina was nice and we even had a swim one night in their heated swimming pool. There were even a couple of sandy beaches as well as play grounds for the kids. Both nights we stayed there we had someone rafted up against us. The first night it was a boat with eight sisters having a sister's day. And the second night it was an old tug (1956). On Friday we headed up to Cuijk and moored on the Kraaijenbergse Plassen. (We have been unable to pronounce either of these names). We stayed the weekend there - it was on the side of a lovely lake. When we arrived Howard decided to take a swim, so put our ladder in behind our boat. He also took advantage of the weather and painted the side and front decks over the weekend. We also had a great view of the start of the sailing regatta, which was right opposite our mooring. They started the little boats first and then about 10 minutes later started the bigger boats. On Sunday we did a tour around the lakes on our bikes.
