20-26 June 's Hertogenbosch (otherwise known as Den Bosch), is a lovely city that we visited last year as well. We arrived on Wednesday and had a bit of a ride in the afternoon. Howard had a nice fish the next morning catching some nice big roach. Later we went to the Jheronimus Bosch Art Center. 's Hertogenbosch is very proud of this painter who lived and worked there from 1450 to 1516, and, to differentiate himself from the other painters in his family signed his paintings with his town (Bosch) rather than his surname. We didn't know much about him, but had seen statues/models made after his pictures. We were happy to learn more about him and his work, and to find that these models were taken from tiny details in his work, which were often about hell, sinners or temptation, giving his imagination free reign. The museum was in a ex-church, and had copies of all his known work, and even some where the attribution was unclear. They had some of those statues/models as well. It was quite a visit, including a trip to the roof for a view of the church. In the evening Leona and Jean-Marie joined us and we went out for a meal to a great local Indonesian restaurant. On Friday afternoon we took the train to Vlaardingen and spent the evening with Ruud and Petra, before Howard and Ruud went off to compete in a 24 hour fishing competition. Petra and I dropped over in the morning to watch the start at 11am, and provide coffee. We then had a nice day day doing a little shopping and stopping at a nice cafe/bistro for lunch overlooking the water. I ended up heading back to the boat in the late afternoon getting back about 7pm. In the mean time Howard and Rudd were enjoying themselves fishing, with Chinese dinner delivered by Petra. After their 24 hours they had 13.9kg and that left them 15th overall. The winning weight was 73kg. They were clearly in the wrong section. But they still had a great time but were quite exhausted, having only had about an hour and a half sleep each. Some photos from Howard Sunday was a good chance for me to catch up on a few jobs, including a bit of shopping. When I returned to the boat I was surprised to see Aisla, a barge that had been at the DBA rally, moored up near Moondance. I caught up with Mike and Sally, and later in the day t'Majeur arrived as well with Rebecca and Michel on board. It was nice to have some friendly DBA faces in the harbour. Ruud brought Howard back to the boat on Monday and we did a big supermarket shop in preparation for Eliza that we expected to arrive on Tuesday. Also to prepare for drinks on the back deck where we had Mike, Sally, Rebecca and Michel over. It was a very pleasant evening, with plenty of barging stories and information shared. On Tuesday morning we went and bought a new rotary clothes line (DoogMolen - Drying windmill), and an electric coolbox for drinks to ease the pressure on the fridge when we have guests. By about 2:30 I was starting to worry about Eliza as we hadn't heard from her since early morning, however when I spoke to her we realised that she was leaving the US on Tuesday and not arriving in the Netherlands until Wednesday. So I had to do research to arrange an alternate rendez-vous with her on Wednesday as we need to leave here in the morning. Then we headed out to do the boat trip on the inner canals of s'Hertogenbosch. The commentary was in Dutch, but it was a nice trip all the same. We now back on the boat and are ready to go through the lock at 11am tomorrow morning. It is only open 3 times a week Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 11am, and apart from being a different and interesting route, will take at least an hour off our trip.
