Friday 23rd June On Friday our new crew arrived - Jean Marie and Leona. After lunch and a tour of Workum we set off. We had the challenge of turning the boat around in a narrow space. But both Jean Marie and Leona are experienced barge captains so we handed over the helm and left Workum safely. We stopped after only an hour and a half and moored at a Marrekrite mooring on an island in the Fluessen not far from Gaastmeer. You are able to moor on one of the Marrekrite moorings in Friesland if you purchase a Marrekrite pennant for less than 20 EUR. We were well protected even in the strong wind. Saturday was another day of strong winds. Howard was at the helm taking advice and learning a lot from Jean-Marie. At one point we saw hoards of people waiting to be ferried across the river and two addition boats had been brought in to help the usual small ferry. Must have been some kind of walking event. We estimated that there must have been over a thousand people. We stayed the night in Akkrum. On Sunday we headed for Grou for lunch and then went to the De Alde Feanen National Park where we had planned a rendez-vous with friends Veronica and Richard. We moored opposite them, and after catching up with them for a coffee, Jean-Marie went fishing under Howard's tutelage, and caught 24 fish including a big bream. In the evening we had a BBQ on board. Everyone contributed something and Howard braved the cold to cook our meat. A lovely evening. Not sure when we will get to see Veronica and Richard again. Monday we set off for Leeuwarden. Finally we had some nice weather, with less wind and even some sunshine. We stopped in Warten to have coffee with a friend of Jean-Marie and Leona who ran a ship building business beside the canal. Then at Leeuwarden we moored up opposite the Prinsestuin (gardens) after rejecting our first 2 moorings. It is a lovely spot. Then Jean-Marie and Leona had to catch the train to Workum to pick up their car and drive home. So now we plan to lay here for a week or so.
