28-30 April Veurne is a lovely old town, that avoided much of the devastation in the two World Wars, and was even the capital of Free Belgium during WWI. The day we arrived was fine so we made sure to have a look around. Including a walk around after diner. On Sunday morning Howard got up early to go to the fishing tackle shop in Nieuwpoort - about 10kms away. After he got home, the rain settled in and it looked like being a cold, wet and windy day. However there was a break in the weather so we headed off on our bikes to visit Castle Beauvoorde about 8 kms away. Quite an interesting little place - an old castle renovated and extended in the late nineteenth century by an aristocrat who loved the earlier eras. By the time we had finished the tour it was raining again and so we didn't really look around the garden. Instead we went to the local cafe for a hot drink. When the rain eased we headed home via the small town of Houtem which was important during WWI but we didn't hang around as the rain had returned. On Monday we had a good sleep-in, especially me, and in the afternoon visited the Free Fatherland museum, which tells about what it was like in this area behind the front line in WWI. I was interested to find the Marie Curie had brought portable x-ray machines here to help with the injured. Then we visited the two churches in town. On the way home we visited Delva, the amazing hardware and homewear store. Howard bought his wet vacuum cleaner which he is very happy with, and has dubbed R2D2.
