16-22 April The city of Ypres was devastated during the Great War, but like Diksmuide and Nieupoort they have rebuilt. It is now a lovely city with plenty of history. Including one of the most impressive city walls in Europe. As we have been here for over a week, we have seen a lot of the town. I will do a separate blog on the WWI sites including Menin Gate as we are going to the Last Post tonight, and the Anzac Day dawn service on Wednesday. The main square (Grote Markt) is very impressive - dominated by the Cloth Hall that now contains the "In Flanders Fields" museum. We climbed the belfry in the cloth hall for great views. Behind the cloth hall is the Cathédrale Saint-Martin. Howard has gone to hire a car and we plan to go to Dunkirk in France tomorrow.

Ieuan and I drove down to Ypres for a ccoupl of nights. We very much enjoyed it. Very busy at Menin gate Last Post service even though just an ordinary evening. I think we got there an hour ahead and were still lucky to get a good view. We also visited Dunkirk on the same trip. Lovely to follow your travels with some envy I must admit.
